Canon’s New Patent Hints at a Game-Changing Lens for Professionals

Canon has set its sights on a lens many photographers have only dreamed about: a high-speed, mid-range zoom with impeccable optical quality. With their recent patent for the RF 70-150mm f/2L IS USM, Canon appears ready to push boundaries in both image quality and innovation.

According to Canon Rumors, this ambitious patent introduces the RF 70-150mm f/2L IS USM lens. Large-aperture zooms have typically been difficult to manage, often becoming costly and weighty as manufacturers aim to deliver consistent image quality across the focal range. Canon’s new patent shows a dedication to overcoming these hurdles via a very complex design, making this lens not just a feat of engineering but also a potentially groundbreaking tool for professionals seeking both reach and quality.

The RF 70-150mm f/2L IS USM features a focal length range ideal for portraits, sports, and event photography in tandem with that extreme aperture. Traditionally, achieving such a broad aperture across a zoom range can be challenging due to the complexity of balancing elements, particularly at the longer end of the focal length. This engineering challenge, while costly, also reflects Canon’s broader strategy of providing unique options within the premium lens market. Their RF 28-70mm f/2L was a hit, and I have to admit it's one of my favorite lenses I've ever used.

Such a lens would undoubtedly be extraordinarily large and well, extraordinarily expensive. The 28-70mm f/2L hit the market at about $3,000, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 70-150mm f/2L come in at around $4,500-5,000. At the same time, though, it would be the only lens like it, and it would likely replace a prime or two in most bags, so I suspect the demand would be there. That being said, a patent is just a patent, and there's no guarantee we'll actually see this lens available for purchase one day, but we can hope!

Alex this is getting really funny... I am waiting and waiting and waiting. This must be the 3rd patent for the same lens in last 5 years. Is Canon testing our memory? 🤣 🤣 🤣

Hahaha good question. A boy can hope, right?

Published patents do not mean the invention will be actually made for commercial use. If it is deemed a real profit potential exists at a given time by its manufacture, it could be made. It may also be a patent to protect their claims in the specific design, keeping competitors from building a product based on their creation. Articles about who patents what are more interesting if confirmation is attained from the patent owners that the invention is in the works to be marketed and when.
