The first step in getting away from the harsh lighting of a bare flash can be as easy as turning the flash head and bouncing off a nearby wall. This isn’t always possible, however, and to get softer lighting a basic bounce dome modifier may come in handy. On the creative side of things, adding color gels or even a snoot modifier can bring interesting looks to a photoshoot.

The secret is to take your flash off the camera, and not to try to modify it.
I went through a number of modifiers before settling on the Fstoppers flashdisc a few years ago. If I can’t bounce, I use the flashdisc 100% of the time.
Just like everyone else, I have a few... I've got the Gary Fong, the Rogue Light Bender with diffuser panel and a Vello Bounce diffuser. Depending on what I'm shooting and where, each one has it's purpose and use. For portability, I've got to go with the Vello.
I've should also mention, I don't really care for on camera flash.
