DJI continues to push the video production industry forward with the drones and camera accessories it has been introducing into the market over the last few years. Just announced at NAB 2017 is a brand new version of their popular gimbal stabilizer, the Ronin 2.
A full press release can be read here, but I'd suggest simply checking out the video above for an overview of the new look and features. Here's a quick rundown of what you'll see:
- Touchscreen controller (can work with RED cameras)
- 30-pound payload capacity, can support everything from DSLRs to cinema cameras
- Carbon fiber build
- Camera cage setup with extendable arms
- Built-in feet (so no more stand to carry around!!)
- Fine tuning knobs for easy adjustments
- New splashproof, more powerful motors
- Second-person remote controller has a one-mile range
- Uses same batteries as the Inspire 2, hot swappable nad last about 2.5 hours
- Quick release system for cable cams and other mounts
- Intelligent smoothtrack mode, panorama mode
No pricing information yet, but DJI says the Ronin 2 will be available in the next few months.
Here are two more videos, the first is a short film that was shot on the new Ronin 2 in basically a single take. The second is a behind-the-scenes video from that same film.
30 lbs! :)
Definitely a step in the right direction however at about 12lbs weight just for the ronin that's too heavy for my needs-so with my goto 16 lbs camera/lens/accessories that's almost 30 lbs total! But will rent if the project needs over the original one I own.
Yes, that's what make me exchange my Ronin to a Ronin M. Puting a single C3 was already very limitating and needed a backpack like easyrig. It's very not convenient for small environment.
If you can balance the camera without powering it, it can even take a FS7 and 10-18 lens without any extra counter weight. My setting can be seen there http://www.visionrouge.net/web/2017/04/sony-fs7-on-dji-ronin-m/
Camera are getting smaller and lighter, but I guess DJI needed to get all sizes covered. I wish they can come with something like OSMO for A7 camera now.
DJI had to drop this since Movi announced the Movi XL
Unfortunately for me a Ronin M isn't enough for my rig: RED Weapon, lens (cinevised Leica or Cooke, or whatever I'd rent), wireless focus, matte box for filters... Yeah on average it's 12-16 lbs on the rig, not counting power and Teradek... But at least the DSMC2's are lighter then the DSMC1's
