Photographer Finds Repeatable Bug on the New Canon EOS R

Photographer Oat Vaiyaboon recently posted a video of two different Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras freezing up after the same steps were performed on each. While this may sound trivial it is clearly something you would not want happening in the middle of a shoot that will need to be addressed with a firmware update sometime in the future.

The issue appears to be lens specific at this time. The Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8mm lens creates the freezing scenario as soon as it is switched from autofocus to manual focus with the switch on the side of the lens.

Vaiyaboon took the time to document the bug in a quick YouTube video. The clip clearly shows the camera working perfectly for a few shots with autofocus on, then immediately after switching the focus to manual the camera takes one last picture and freezes. The camera is actually so locked up it requires the battery to be removed to restart the device. To avoid the case that it may have been a bad body or lens the exact issue is repeated on a second camera and lens.

Unfortunately, as cameras become less analog and more computerized I have a feeling we may be seeing more and more of this. Computers freeze up. Cell phones freeze up. And now apparently, so do brand new mirrorless cameras. Have you ever encountered a glitch like this with your camera?

Thanks to Vaiyaboon for reaching out to Fstoppers with the news after frustratingly discovering the bug himself while shooting.

My main concerns is why would it suddenly stop working, when it was working fine the day before. I know canon isn't suppost to look out for other manufacturor lens. I can completely understna that.

What was the difference in battery power levels? What had been the immediate power-on and usage pattern just before lock-up compared to just after.

The problem will always be that without fairly extensive testing, you might not find where Samyang reverse engineering has missed a point.

Propaganda post by Sony? 😂

Like many others, I feel like the title was selected to get people to click on the article and read it, instead of being selected as nothing more than a brief summary of the article's contents. I HATE titles that are designed to make me curious and click - their use is unprofessional and cheesy.
A much better title would have been, "Samyang lens causes Canon EOS R to lock up." That title would have informed me much better than the current title did. Titles are supposed to be things that tell the potential reader what the article is about, not something to get the reader interested in reading the article.
Shame on the author and shame on FStoppers, for allowing a clickbait title to get published yet again.

Check out Zach Ashcraft's comment above. His Canon EOS R froze up with Canon lenses to the point where he returned it.
That is a valid occurrence of Canon's gear freezing and exactly the point of me publishing this. To open the discussion.
I understand what you're saying, but disagree with your assessment.
Still standing by my title and I think the "shame" comments are misguided.

If lock-ups with Canon lenses were a problem of any significantly frequent occurrence, we'd certainly have heard more about it after six months. The two events need more correlation than that they both occurred on a couple of samples of the camera.

I used to own this lens for sony and it would freeze the sony all the time.

I'm sure this will get buried but I am a professional photographer and just had this happen to me using all official Canon lenses batteries adaptor and the EOS R. I had to take the battery out every few shots to restart the camera. As a wedding photographer, this is very disconcerting! Any help or fixed appreciated.
