A Photographer's Thoughts Three Months After Switching to Sony

Cameras are always improving, but it seems like the rate of progress has kicked into another gear in the last few years, with Canon, Sony, Fuji, and Nikon all blazing ahead with remarkably advanced bodies. One photographer recently decided to switch to Sony for his work, and this great video takes a balanced look at his thoughts after three months with the system.

Coming to you from James Popsys, this excellent video essay discusses some of his thoughts after three month of using a Sony system. The thing I always enjoy about Popsys' videos is that he takes a very pragmatic approach to his work and photography in general, and as such, his thoughts are really worth listening to, as he is giving a fair and balanced perspective and not hyping one brand or another for clout. The truth is that you can make fantastic images with pretty much any camera made nowadays, and the great thing about that is that you can really find which system works best for you, which inspires you, which fits all the nuances of your workflow and creative approach best instead of worrying about sacrificing one major feature so you can get another one you need. Check out the video above for Popsys' full thoughts on the Sony system.

I’m sure the phrase ‘switching to Sony’ is going to end up on one of those top 10 most hated phrases in photography lists before long.

In this case I have no idea why Popsys has even done it, his photography doesn’t need all the fancy AF tech and he was a brand ambassador for LUMIX, very strange decision.

I think we're already there in terms of 'switching to Sony' being one of those hated phrases. Heck, just uttering the word 'Sony' causes some members of past to throw their little tantrums. But, with that said, I think they've finally calmed down.

Why? Why should anyone care what someone else uses if it’s not the same as you? If Sony users upset you then you have problems.

What are you drunk or stoned? You're not making any sense. Sober up or read what I said slower. If need be, have someone read it aloud for you. You totally have it backwards.

Hahaha very true. I don’t care what people use but I am tired of seeing it on YouTube channels, more because it’s just repetitive than anything to do with Sony.

It’s ok though because 2022 will be the year of ‘Why I switched to Nikon’ , it’s already starting.

Cognitive dissonance is powerful juju.

We voluntarily spend bucket loads of coin on a particular system; in the process, that system/brand becomes conflated with our core identity.

And so we get people having bitter arguments over brand. It's a little crazy.

Look at the video - he's explaining the reasons he had for switching. He stil loves the Lumix-es though. And i do believe it is an good & fair review. He even puts the fingers into the wounds where it hurts for Sony.

Why on earth should the phrase 'switching to Sony' be a hated phrase? Everyone is entitled to make his/her/? own choises. It's only a medium to take pictures - there's no one being hurt by a camera change is it?

Today it's Sony - within a few years he can opt for medium format and switch to Fuji - and who am i to have comments on that fact?

That couldn't be said, or even better, written in two or three sentences? Why should anyone care if some dude is changing his gear? Does he take better photos? If so, it was not the camera.

--- "That couldn't be said, or even better, written in two or three sentences?"

No. Read the 2nd paragraph, since you like to read so much. lol

--- "Why should anyone care if some dude is changing his gear?"

Well, you're here, in this article aren't you? Or, do you just enjoy self inflicted grief by commenting on videos you don't care about? This dude has a decent following, so yeah, many care about this thoughts.

That's why this is important: "This guy has a decent following"? Now that's an argument, isn't it? Have fun and be glad someone is answering you at all.

Yes, in today's world, think of subscribers/followers as constituents. If you ignore them, they go away.

If it's not important to you, you could just skip it. It's not like that the topic of the video is hidden. I mean, c'mon man, there's a play icon so you know it's going to be a video. The article title, the video title, the article summary pretty much laid out what you're about to watch. smh

Just remember where we are: not on Youtube. I don't think the FS should be a distribution channel for clumsy and boring videos. There are some good writers here at FS who really try hard to generate content, but this nonsense is too often promoted here. It's a cheap way, with little effort of its own, to attract visitors. - I often comment positively on good articles, so I also take the liberty of saying what I don't like.

Likewise, remember, this is 2021, not 1991. Today, there are more avenues to distribute information. It's best you get on with the times. You know what the best part is….you have options. Whooah. Mind blown, right?

Sigh, I shouldn't have to continually mansplain things to you.

Yes, you say it. More opportunities for content distribution. But that doesn't make the content one bit better. It's redundancy. If at least the videos had some quality, but many are just bad, like this one. What's the gain for everyone else? None.

It's free-riding. They (author and FS) take advantage of it. The "reader" is bombarded with cheap videos of some person whose waving and face you are supposed to watch, whose long-winded, often repetitive statements that hundreds before him have also made, you are supposed to listen to, even though you know full well that it is not about interesting things at all, but only about making money with as many clicks and as little effort as possible.

And then you should vote and comment. Like hundreds have done on youtube? That's ridiculous. If I want to be a groupie, I'd stay right on youtube, I'd be a follower and then I'd be happy about every fart that was let out there.

Don't get me wrong. Those youtubers or the like can do what they want. FS can do what it wants. If the videos were at least curated a bit more thoughtfully but about every video is introduced with the word awesome.

Oh, cry me a river. Stop being such a baby. If I've told you 4 times, I've told you 4 million times, just skip it. You keep using the words "supposed to" and "should". Do you not have free-will where you come from? Is this concept foreign to you?

And, you are apparently not very observant. Had you paid attention to those links I gave you, which are heading categories of the site, between the 3, more than the majority are non-videos.

So, let's summarize:

1. Free-will. You ain't gots to do it if you don't wants to.
2. Stop being lazy and childish. Since the "Latest" tab isn't curated to your liking, visit one of the other tabs. smh

Who are you? Just give up interfering with other people's opinion. As a reader, you are the last person here who should care about such things anyway. But maybe I misunderstand your role here. Maybe you are a hired groupie?
I have not yet read anything of yours that actually has anything to do with photography.

Why should anyone even care what camera another photographer uses. People who get upset about that have problems.

People don’t generally, they just get sick of hearing about it.

The photographer must have thought everyone cared since he created the video.

YouTube ….. more clicks more money ……….

I remember was James was using the Nikon 750 , he then made the Switch to the 4/3 system because , according to him it was lighter, smaller and took beautiful pictures and now Sony came to the door !!! ..... James is a good YouTube photographer like a few other , changing camera brand won't change is photography ......

I have always been a Nikon guy. You really don't need the most up to date super equipment. Photographs are made by a keen and creative eye. The equipment only captures what the photographer sees.

the 3 year old sony a7riii is now 2k
nothing from nikon or canon can come close for under 3k

and there is such a wide array of lenses available for the sony e-mount full-frame that nobody feels pressure to overpay because of lack of diversity

James HAD to make this video. He knew it would likely end up his most watched video, just like the comments section is blowing up here.

Dude needs to make a living somehow. He's a YouTuber. It's what they do.

It's interesting to see how many people get frustrated by these videos yet they continue to watch them.

he is getting more views using a Sony camera vs a Lumix .......Important if you are a YouTuber
