Sigma has announced the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art, a redesigned version of its established 35mm f/1.4 Art prime. Positioned as the Type II successor to the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art, the new lens focuses on reducing physical size and weight while introducing a revised optical formula and updated autofocus system. The lens will be available for L-Mount and Sony E-mount cameras.
The 35mm focal length continues to be one of the most widely used options across both photography and video production. It is frequently chosen for its flexibility, offering a natural perspective suitable for documentary work, environmental portraiture, street photography, and general-purpose shooting. Sigma’s latest iteration does not alter the role of the lens within a kit but instead refines the design priorities. Compared to the previous generation, Sigma states the 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art is approximately 14 percent shorter and 20 percent lighter.
A significant part of the update involves a completely new optical design. The lens uses a 15-element, 12-group construction that incorporates four aspherical elements and two Special Low Dispersion elements. Sigma reports improvements in overall resolution and suppression of common large-aperture aberrations, particularly axial chromatic aberration. An 11-blade rounded diaphragm is used to maintain smoother out-of-focus rendering, a key characteristic for lenses in this class. Sigma also introduces its Advanced Amorphous Coating, intended to reduce flare and ghosting artifacts under challenging lighting conditions.
Autofocus performance has also been revised. The lens employs Sigma’s dual High-response Linear Actuator motor system, a configuration designed to move larger focus groups with greater speed and lower noise. Sigma emphasizes faster and quieter focusing along with reduced focus breathing. This is especially relevant for hybrid shooters and video creators, where focus transitions and framing stability are often more noticeable.
Externally, the lens follows the control layout commonly seen across Sigma’s Art series. It includes two AFL buttons, a focus mode switch, and a manual aperture ring. The aperture ring features both a click switch and a lock switch, allowing users to adjust tactile feedback and prevent accidental movement. Sigma also highlights dampened focus and aperture rings for smoother operation. The lens body includes a dust- and splash-resistant structure, along with water- and oil-repellent coatings on the front element. As with most weather-resistant lenses, the design is not intended to be waterproof. A petal-type hood with a locking mechanism is included.

For photographers, a 35mm f/1.4 prime remains a practical choice for low-light shooting and subject isolation while maintaining environmental context. For video creators, Sigma’s emphasis on minimized focus breathing and quieter autofocus operation addresses common production concerns, particularly for handheld and gimbal-based work.
The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II | Art represents a refinement of one of Sigma’s core Art series focal lengths, concentrating on portability, optical revisions, and autofocus performance without repositioning the lens into a new category.
