The Upcoming Canon EOS R3 Will Challenge One of Sony's Best Features

The Canon EOS R3 is inching closer to its full official announcement, and we are getting more and more details about the camera. The newest detail is particularly intriguing, as it shows Canon going toe to toe with Sony on one of its most innovative features.

Canon Rumors is reporting that the upcoming EOS R3 will have reduced viewfinder lag and perhaps more importantly, no viewfinder blackout. While these two issues might not matter to a lot of photographers, for sports, wildlife photographers, or anyone else shooting fast action, no viewfinder blackout is a significant advantage, as it makes it far easier to follow action in the viewfinder. This was one of the headline features of the original Sony a9 and was lauded by a wide variety of photographers, as it takes intense concentration and skill to track things like darting birds in the viewfinder, and removing the visual interruption of a blacked-out viewfinder can make this task significantly easier. When taken in tandem with features like a 30 fps continuous burst rate, eight stops of image stabilization when coordinated with optical and in-body capabilities, a back-illuminated sensor design for reduced rolling shutter, and heavy weather-sealing, the EOS R3 looks like it will be quite the camera for action.

It's nice to see Canon is finally getting around to matching a camera that was discontinued last week.

Why so salty? Everyone wins with progression and evolving tech.

Zing! That was pretty good.

Its all well and good matching an outdated Sony for specs but where is it going to be on price? There are rumours that this is one expensive mutha!

I'd be willing to bet a burger and a beer that Canon will sell a bunch of them. ;-)

Outdated Sony? The A1 only released a few months ago...

A9 was just discontinued, and the R3 is aiming at the A9 series. Sony should be releasing an A9 III within a year or sooner.

I'm not sure Sony will release another A9 variant. It makes total sense to have the A1 serve the uber pro action crowd with both speed and resolultion, and the R for studio/landscape with the S for video. It would make zero sense to release an A9iii. Heck the A9ii was a minor, very minor upgrade.

A9 II was 100% aimed at the AP, since it had workflow enhancements. Expect the A9 III to have serious upgrades, with Sony already using their 2nd gen stacked sensor tech (RX100 VIII, A1). Considering the price difference of both cameras, the A9 III would be a great backup to the A1.

I imagine this is going to be a highly competitive product. I'm curious to see how it will be priced. Anyone have thoughts ? I'm hoping this is a sub $4,000 camera.

This camera will be north of 6k. If it isn't, Sony will be reducing the A1 price.
