Tried shooting with a tele lens but am super enthusiastic about learning macro and planning to purchase a lens soon.

Not knowing the size of your subject or how or the size of your sensor.......we can't but guess........

Haa, the subject is a tiny gecko. Probably 4" in size. I'm not sure of the size of the sensor, but am shooting on a Sony A7III.

Macro photography is generally considered to start at 1:1 magnification. Sensor size versus size of the subject.
