composition could be a bit better but that is an awesome shot i would love to try this technique. I'm assuming its timing and luck involved? how long was the exposure?

From everything I've heard. You try to get as long of an exposure as possible and do that over and over again until lighting strikes during that period. Apparently, lightning is bright enough to still be bright even on a long exposure.

I agree. I don't know where to start... Do you "camp out", set a long exposure, and hope for the best?

Awesome lightning capture!

You check the weather for storm possibilities, preferably not exactly where you. If the storm is right on top of you rain might ruin your shot or your tripod might act as a lightning rod.

Set up your composition, and exposure time for the scene, then lock your remote trigger and pray for lightning :D
There are some triggers that are supposed to auto trigger when lightning strikes but i have a hard time believing they are fast enough.

Really awesome lightning capture Matt. As Joseph said the boat could be a bit more centered. And the hues in the sky feel a bit off (too much magenta) might be my screen at work though.
