A recent post by the Phoblograher states, "SMALL SENSOR CAMERAS SUCK; IT’S TIME TO BE REAL HERE." What was this guy thinking when he wrote this? I, for one, appreciate the smaller sensor cameras, particularly the OM System OM-1, due to the added magnification it gives me when capturing wildlife and nature. I wrote a rebuttal detailing all the benefits and how they were pioneered by the Micro Four Thirds companies, in particular Olympus. As with most things in life, there are pros and cons with everything. Crop sensors have advantages and some disadvantages, as do full frame cameras. It depends on what you like to shoot, and what your priorities are, cost, weight etc.
2ndly, it’s much easier to write and opine about gear, than it is about what good photography is, because there are specs and numbers. But in the end it’s the skill of the photographer that makes the image, not what camera they used. There are fantastic photographers on both full frame and crop sensor systems, and you wouldn’t be able to tell who used what. Talking about gear is like painters talk about what brushes they use.. it’s largely irrelevant.
Lastly, these websites need attention grabbing content that people click on, read, and see ads in the process. A divisive and opinionated headline is designed to stir the pot. It is designed to validate the decisions of some folks, and it sows doubt and gets the blood boiling of others who are in the other camp.
The author of that article is the editor in chief of that outlet, so he has every incentive to get his articles go as far and wide as possible, get picked up by others and “go viral” so to speak. For that it needs to grab attention. So I’d take whatever it is they write with a grain of salt.
To make a long story short, I’d ignore all that and focus on making great photographs with the tools you have chosen for yourself, probably with good reason.
Good advise but… Without others, like myself, pointing out the Phoblographers lack of knowledge on the subject of Micro Four Thirds, many will believe his unfounded perspective. Without pushing back the masses are happy to continue down the road of ignorance with a completely ignorant leader. It happens in all aspects of life. Politics anyone?
