2013 Mac Pros Can't Boot After a Mysterious Avid Media Composer Crash, and the Cause Is Quite Surprising

Hollywood post-production houses have faced quite a peculiar "slow crash" of the famous "trash can" Mac Pro during editing in Avid Media Composer. At the end, it turns out the problem is caused by something you'd least expect.

It sounds like a script for a Sherlock Holmes movie. The crash has spread through 2013 Mac Pro users running OS X 10.11 or later and editing with Avid Media Composer, reported No Film School. As a result, the machine can't boot back, and the only remedy is to reinstall the OS. The good news (if "good" is an appropriate term) is that you don't have to format the hard drive. Otherwise, you'd lose your data. Аn OS-savvy Avid editor said that there was a corruption to a very important file system folder called "iLok app," after which shutdown occurs and the machine can't boot back up.

The usual suspects were, of course, some kind of malware or an Apple update. But lo and behold, the reason turned out to be a Google Chrome update that corrupted that folder. According to a Google report, this happens only on machines that had SIP (System Integrity Protection) turned off.

No Fim School has been following the development of the story and has posted a solution that doesn't the require one to reinstall the OS, instead using a few commands in the console that look scary, but are said to fix the problem.

Lazy journalism, copying and pasting a 2 week-old article already covered by other outlets when it WAS relevant.

I hadn’t seen it.. and I never caught it on your website either

Mr Anderson is right about one thing: I haven't pushed for getting the article published sooner, although I wrote it the day after the reason was disclosed.

The rest of his sentence needs some proof though :)
