The Incredible Detective Work Behind Finding the Photographer of This Iconic Image

What's the most difficult environment you've ever taken a photo in? The time when you had one chance to get the shot with no opportunity to try again? Does it compare to tumbling around the moon at several miles per second while capturing one of the most iconic images of all-time? Check out this great video that explores the creation of "Earthrise."

The astronauts of Apollo 8 became the first humans to travel beyond low-Earth orbit and orbit another celestial body, one of the amazing consequences of the latter being they were the first humans witness an Earthrise over the moon's horizon, with the historic moment happening on December 24, 1968. Astronaut Bill Anders ended up snapping one of the most iconic photos in history during the event, simply named "Earthrise," taken on a modified Hasselblad 500 EL using custom Kodak Ektachrome film, shot at 1/250 s at f/11. However, it was unclear who actually took the shot for a bit of time. Thank to some amazing detective work by NASA Visualization Studio Specialist Ernie Wright, however, it was determined that Anders snapped the photo. Check out the simulation and amazing story in the video from Vintage Space above, which puts you right there with the astronauts.

Wow. I always thought that image was taken from the surface of the moon. Great post Alex.

:)

So did I. :) The audio recordings are very interesting.

He also happened to be the only person in the world not in that image. just FYI :)

this photo

yes that craft in the shot has two guys onboard

Been following Amy's space- nerdy site for quite some time, collecting some lore of the days of ole.
Glad to see her show featured here, too.

I follow her too and I've learned a lot about both the Apollo and Vostok/ Soyuz space programs.

so cool !!!
