By far, the most crucial thing you should get in the habit of doing immediately is shooting in raw. While you do not necessarily have to edit your photos significantly, landscape photographers often like to push their files quite a bit, particularly since such scenes often have a very wide dynamic range and modern sensors have a lot of post-processing latitude that will allow you to bring shadows up quite a bit without a significant image quality penalty.
