The Struggle and Reward of Good Landscape Compositions

Composition is one of the subtlest and trickiest aspects of landscape photography, and it is something we all struggle with at one time or another. If that is something you have trouble with, be sure to watch this great video that follows an experienced photographer as he works through a difficult composition of his own.

Coming to you from Steve O'Nions, this excellent video follows him as he works the composition of a tree. Composition is always a challenge, and I often find working in a forest to be particularly difficult. Because of the density and complexity of the trees, finding a clean framing that still has a range of layers to add depth and visual interest to the image can be really difficult. And of course, with landscape photography specifically, you can't adjust the elements in the scene to create a cleaner or more balanced composition. On the other hand, I find it tremendously satisfying when I finally find the perfect look for a scene. Check out the video above for the full rundown from O'Nions.
