Why This Death Valley Dunes Video Made Me Want to Book a Flight Immediately

Some locations get overlooked because they seem too familiar—but every so often, a photographer comes along and shows you just how wrong that thinking is.

As a landscape photographer based in Ireland, I have said on many occasions that Ireland punches above its weight when it comes to landscape photography! We have everything here on such a small footprint—except for glaciers, rainforests, and deserts, of course! And this is where I wish we had one of them: deserts, and more specifically, sand dunes!

In this latest video adventure from Michael Shainblum, we are transported to a location that some might take for granted: the dunes in Death Valley! Michael, of course, has visited this location many times before and has encountered all types of light and conditions during these trips. However, this one is special.

An incredible wind gusts through, whisking the sand as it flows through, producing some stunning scenes to photograph!

If you want to witness amazing light, incredible photographs, and ultimately—like me—stir up some major senses of awe, wonderment, and determination to go there yourself, this video will tick all those boxes and more!

Do you have a location near you that might be taken for granted but is actually a bucket list location?

I went to the Sahara in January. Very exciting. The dunes there were a little more reddish.

Great images! Had you photographed dunes before then?

No…. I went with no preconceived notions. I forced myself to be a little kid again and to just play with the shapes I saw and just have fun like a little kid in a sand box. I love your images. When I wen to DV, I never made it to the dunes because I was sick with COVID.

You did very well for the first time! I think the approach you took was exactly the right one, after all, we grow up to fast.
