The palace Quinta da Regaleira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex was built in 1904-10 by an eccentric Freemason and its magical garden is full of symbolism in grottoes, waterfalls, towers and the fascinating Initiation Well. As the weather in Sintra – a mountainous region with several castles above the clouds and near Lisbon in southern Portugal – can change dramatically, two hours earlier the sky was clear blue and suddenly thick fog swept over the mountains.
