The Novus Lobby

The Novus is a new high rise apartment building in downtown Durham, North Carolina. One of their marketing people saw one of my exteriors I did just on my own and invited me in to the building to take tour. They also let me have access to most of the building and to photograph whatever I wanted.

This is one of the common areas for residents. I thought it was well designed and looked nice and would make a good portfolio piece. I moved a few things here and there to make it more symmetrical.

I used my godox ad300pro with a soft box and fired off a few shots from the left mimicking the natural light coming in from the windows on the left. My goal was to have that raking light going across the scene.

I used several of my flash shots and then just a regular ambient shot and opened them in photoshop. I blended in my flash shots together using masking and painting in the light with a brush with a combination of lighten mode and normal. I then used my ambient shot on luminosity mode and a low opacity as well as masking it in where I wanted to help fill in some of the shadows.

After I got my blend how I wanted I just did some basic adjustments in camera raw to bring it all together.
