Today, Camera Bits released the new version of their fast image viewer, Photo Mechanic 6. They are now teasing a limited public beta for a long-requested catalog add-on feature which will be called Photo Mechanic Plus.
On April 22, owners of the new Photo Mechanic 6 will be invited to participate in a limited public beta of Photo Mechanic Plus at no additional cost. Camera Bits described their catalog feature as "an image database for managing large numbers of image files across multiple locations." It's unknown at this time if they plan on doing anything new in this area, or rather just matching functionality that other programs such as Adobe Lightroom and Capture One are capable of here.
For beta testers, Camera Bits said that they will have a forum set up for users to give their feedback on the program's features and performance. However, they also said that there would be no formal customer support for the catalog feature while in its public beta period.
After the beta period is over, Photo Mechanic Plus will be offered as a paid upgrade from Photo Mechanic 6 with pricing still to be determined.
Only paying customers of Photo Mechanic 6 will be eligible to test out Photo Mechanic Plus in beta, so users on the 30-day free trial will not be able to participate.
I love Photo Mechanic and can't wait to see what this new feature actually does.

I just want someone to get the code for Aperture off Apple and reinvigorate what I consider the perfect digital asset management system.

This could be interesting since LR only gives you a simple connection to another device and that's only mobile. If they nail the catalog across multiple devices idea there may finally be a competitor to Mylio which does virtually unlimited devices, computers, etc. We currently have 5 macs and 4 iOS devices syncing our entire 1.2 million image library across all of them with phenomenal speed and redundancy. Nothing comes even close to Mylio so far but this product from Camerabits may change all that. Fingers crossed.
