More poignant for me than you might expect. I visited my mother-in-law Di for Christmas twice after my wife died. The first year, my attempt to photograph this beautiful large-leafed plant didn't work as well as I wanted (D700 lacked 100% viewfinder!). The next year, I could really see what I was photographing, and then the glancing light just made the shot.
That was the last year I had Christmas there, as Di developed cancer and was too ill the following Christmas to have guests, and gone by the next. I surprised Sarah, my wife's beloved sister by adoption, by giving her a framed A2 print of Di's elephant ear as a Christmas present. We both burst into tears.
