Male Broadbill Hummingbird with Ruff

Usually hummingbirds are more streamlined. I have no idea why his neck feathers are flared out like this. I've never seen that before or since. This photo was taken at Patagonia Lake State Park in Arizona, using high speed flash and a white cardboard background. This bird is common in that area, particularly in higher elevations. However, this photo was taken at lower altitude in a riparian area.
