This portrait was taken at the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook NY, a museum and performance space on Long Island. Tom is the director of the loft, a jazz historian, band leader, and trumpet player. His office was the perfect place to capture him since he was surrounded by items that represent him well and reflect the era he loves.
The space was very small, so I had to position my key light in through the doorway on a c stand. I used 2 flashes, key above his head with a small diffuser and amber gel, and one behind him to add a bit of light to the book case. I edited it in Affinity Photo to give it an old fashioned (or aged) look, since I felt it added to the character of the Loft and Tom himself, since he is an old soul.
