For my first ever hike in Yosemite, my not-yet-boyfriend and I hiked up to an overlook, twirling rain jackets in front of us to fend off hoards of gnats. Smoke from several nearby fires was so intense that the entire valley was rendered in blurry pastel. We kept our that first hike short, to save my asthma, and I took this shot of the valley at the top, with the smoke encroaching from beyond Half Dome. As soon as we got to the bottom, the rain started.
The rest of the day was crystal clear.
