Canary Spring Terraces, Mammoth Hot Springs

In the late 1800s, yellow fibrous bacteria thrived, and the name Canary Spring. These days, the spring exhibits oranges, browns, and greens seen in other hot springs, as well as vibrant pinks and neon greens. Occasionally, the spring goes dormant as the terraces dry the bacteria die leaving calcium carbonate in the form of travertine and bleaches white till the hot water returns followed by the color rich cyanobacteria.
