A Detailed Guide to Posing a Non-model for a Full-body Portrait

The nice aspect of learning things like camera settings and lighting is that these topics can often be objectively quantified. On the other hand, something like posing is a bit more nebulous and something that many photographers struggle with even when they have mastered other aspects of portrait work. If posing is something you are still working on learning, check out this fantastic video tutorial that will show you how to pose a full-body portrait when working with a non-model.

Coming to you from Jiggie Alejandrino, this excellent video tutorial will show you the details of posing a full-body portrait. No doubt, posing can be a real challenge for a lot of photographers, and that can put a lot of pressure on you during a shoot. One useful technique is to have a list of five or so poses you know work well that you can use to get some assured shots, thus taking the pressure off and allowing you to explore more organic poses without worry. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Alejandrino.

Learning to pose people quickly and naturally is one of the harder skills we face as photographers. Always good to see how other people approach this. I remember Joey Wright teaching posing in his swimwear tutorial and it was pretty eye opening on the little nuance he picks up on.
