Peak Design, known for their straps, bags, and carry accessories, has partnered with Carryology, releasing special editions of their popular products. I was sent a few of these, so consider this a hands-on first look at them.
I’ve been a Peak Design fan for years at this point, having their version 2 Capture Clip, their Slide and Clutch camera straps, as well as the Tech Pouch. So you can imagine my excitement upon receiving these to try out.
The full collection includes Slide, Slide Lite, Leash, and Cuff camera straps, as well as the newer version of the Capture Clip and their MagSafe phone tripod. Of these, I’m looking at the Slide Lite, Capture Clip, and phone tripod.
Getting started with the Slide Lite camera strap – mainly rated for smaller mirrorless camera setups – I do enjoy the flat black color with orange accents. The anchors you’ll notice are full black as opposed to the classic black and red aesthetic. As I have the Slide strap for my heavier camera setups, my plan here is to use this one on one of my 35mm film cameras, as sometimes I like having a strap on them but also like the convenience of being able to pop it on and off as I please. As always, they include additional anchors for more usability. They now also seem to include links to attach the links to the little metal bits on the sides of some cameras that would otherwise be harder to attach a strap to, so that’s pretty cool.
According to the press release, the straps are also made with an upgraded material to make them more theft- and cut-resistant, which is cool to see.
Then there’s the Capture Clip, which is their new style featuring a metallic orange finish. I’ve been a user of the version 2 Capture for a while, using it off and on depending on the application. To compare the two, the newer design, which I haven’t really used before, has a smaller form factor featuring the same plate size. It does feel pretty robust, and I’ll try it out for travel, daily carry, etc., to get a full impression versus my previous Capture Clip. While it is quite bright, the color is pretty nice if you want something that stands out more or is rather unique.
Lastly, of what I was sent, there’s the mobile phone tripod. This is designed for MagSafe or to be used with the Peak Design iPhone case. Initially, I didn’t think it would work with my phone case that I naturally had, as it doesn’t have MagSafe built into it, but it did still manage to work with some success. That said, however, without a case or with a MagSafe case would definitely be the way to go long term. The tripod itself does add a decent amount of weight to your phone, so I don’t know if it’s something you’d always want to carry around. But if you can live with the extra weight, it can be a very convenient way to quickly set your phone up without needing to bring anything extra. The build quality is solid, and for content creation, time lapses, and general mobile photography, this can be a great addition without the need for bringing along an additional tripod, phone clamp, etc., that most usually have to.
The other products in the line from the collab follow the same black and orange color scheme if you’re looking for something a little more unique. I personally enjoy the orange accents and would consider these a welcome addition to my Peak Design lineup. If I am being nitpicky, I did notice they don’t include stickers in their boxes anymore. Now granted, I’m sure I have enough by now, but I’ve always been someone who enjoys a brand’s sticker within the product. Might just be me, and if that’s the worst I can say, well, they’re not doing too bad of a job.
