A Look at the Highly Affordable Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 Lens

Few lenses are more classic than a wide-aperture 85mm, which is often the preferred choice of portrait photographers. Nonetheless, a good 85mm lens can be awfully expensive. There are some quite affordable options out there as well, with one such example being the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8, and this excellent video review takes a look at the image quality and performance you can expect from it in practice.

Coming to you from Dustin Abbott, this great video review takes a look at the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 lens. At $399, the AF 85mm f/1.8 is impressively affordable when compared to its peers; nonetheless, it still has some worthwhile features, including:

  • One extra-low dispersion element and four highly transparent glass elements for less aberrations and better color rendition
  • A single large-diameter aspherical element for less distortion and higher levels of sharpness
  • HD Nano Multi-Layer Coating for less flares and ghosting and better contrast
  • USB-C port for firmware upgrades
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh

Altogether, the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 looks like quite the impressive performer, especially given its price, making it an intriguing option for wedding photographers, portraitists, and more. Check out the video above for Abbott's full thoughts on the lens.

As soon as I see the word "affordable", I fear that it will have no autofocus, and be manual-focus only. A pity for me, because I would want a lens of this focal length and this aperture for quickly moving wild animals, where there is not sufficient time for accurate manual focusing.

But I think that for those photographing more or less static subject matter, this would be a great value.

It is an autofocus lens, I have one the I use on my Nikon Z6II. Fantastic piece of glass

That's great! So many times the opposite is true with these 3rd party super-budget lenses.

Many "affordable" lenses nowadays have auto-focus. A tell tale sign is the "AF" in the naming convention, such as the lens in this article.

It's not a good lens I tested this and the yonguno 851.8 and the yonguno is way better
