As video and long exposures become more popular, reliable power sources are essential. The Neewer PS099E V-mount battery is a compact, high-capacity, and versatile battery that’s perfect for powering your entire video or stills camera rig. And it is orange.
I’m often out at night photographing star trails. That calls for long exposures, and although my OM-1 Mark II battery easily copes with multiple 30-minute exposures, there are times when I need even longer exposures. Similarly, I may have my camera shooting time-lapse shots over several hours, and I don’t want my camera’s power to be interrupted. Luckily, my camera can be powered from an external source, and that’s where a high-capacity V-mount battery comes into play.
Moreover, I also have mobile video lighting that I can run from an external battery source using a D-Tap connection. Therefore, being able to plug those into a reliable power source is beneficial.
This is where a high-capacity V-mount battery truly shines.
What Is a V-Mount Battery?
A V-mount battery (also sometimes known as a V-lock battery) is a professional-grade power solution. It is designed to mount securely onto compatible V-mount plates and is capable of powering multiple devices simultaneously, such as cameras, lights, monitors, and microphones. That makes it ideal for filmmakers and content creators who need uninterrupted power on set or in the field.
I Also Bought a Mount Plate
To take full advantage of the battery, I also bought a mount plate. There are an enormous number of these available from Neewer, each one with different output ports that suit your device's needs. I would only be using the USB-C port on the battery most of the time, or maybe the D-Tap output, so I chose a simple model.
Key Features to Consider
Besides probably having to buy a V-mount plate to attach the battery to your tripod, there are two important features that you should consider before purchasing a battery:
1. Capacity
The Neewer PS099E delivers 6,800 mAh at 14.5 V. That translates to approximately 99 Wh, the maximum allowed for carry-on air travel. This high capacity means fewer battery swaps in the field and more time shooting.
2. Port Variety
The Neewer PS099E battery is equipped with six ports:
-
USB-A (output)
-
USB-C (input/output, up to 65 W)
-
2.1 mm 8 V (output)
-
2.5 mm 12 V (output)
-
D-Tap (input/output)
-
BP charging port (input/output)
Those ports are protected by hinged rubber covers, except the BP port, which remains exposed for mounting compatibility.
First Impressions and Build Quality
The PS099E arrived in minimal, recyclable packaging; as an eco-conscious buyer, that's something I am always pleased to see. This newest version of the battery is bright orange (it’s also available in black). For me, that is a boon as I use it at night, and it is much easier to find in a bag and see when it is in use than a black unit.
It’s compact, measuring 3.37” x 2.87” x 2.23” (8.6 x 7.3 x 5.67 cm), and relatively lightweight, weighing 20.8 oz (590 g). Its external construction comprises a durable fireproof plastic casing with textured, non-slip edges.
On the front is a power button and an OLED-illuminated digital readout, which gives the battery charge level, power being delivered or drawn, and the input/output status for each port. You can toggle between different display modes with a short press of the power button. The OLED screen is well-designed, clear, and easy to read in varying lighting conditions.
The unit also includes a battery management system (BMS) for protection against overcharging, overheating, and voltage spikes.
Performance in the Field
The battery level showed the unit held around a 50% charge when it was delivered, and it reached full capacity in under two hours using my high-speed USB-C charger (not included). I then plugged it into a Neewer FS-230B bi-color video light for over an hour. I noticed no flickering or brightness drop. This was the same performance as a similar Neewer battery I tested a while ago, which suggests consistency in manufacturing standards.
I was pleased with the OLED display. It provided real-time feedback on charge level and power flow, and the power button, which toggles between display modes, was simple to use. All the ports are well-spaced, making it easy to connect multiple devices without crowding.
Travel-Friendly Design
It’s always worth checking with your airline before flying, but at 99 Wh, the PS099E is compliant with international airline regulations for carry-on batteries; never put batteries in the hold. As a precaution, I tape over terminals or use original packaging to negate the risk of short circuits and fires.
Other Uses
Apart from extending the life of a camera battery when in use, I have also been using this as a high-capacity power bank. When out in the wilds without access to electricity, I can charge my phone and tablet with it.
Although this isn’t the intended purpose, a friend of mine has one of these to power LED lights in his shed. The battery pack is recharged by a small solar panel on the roof.
It Likes to Be Used
Li-ion batteries like to be used, not stored fully charged. A few years ago, I left a Li-ion battery from a different brand in a drawer and did not use it for a year. When I needed it, I plugged it in, and it wouldn't charge. So, the same applies to this as it does to your camera batteries. Plug it into a device, run it, then recharge it to between 30% and 50%. Remember to charge and use it every couple of months.
Store it in a non-conductive container in a cool, dry place, ideally between 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F).

Thanks for the review - it looks like a great battery… but I believe these house Lithium Ion batteries, rather than NiMh cells. I’m guessing that their characteristics regarding storage may be quite different?
Hi Mike, sorry. You are correct. I don't know how I managed to type that. The advice for storage is the same: keep them in a cool, dry place with a charge level around 30-50%. I have asked the editors to correct it. You get 10 points for observation! Thanks.
Haha - thanks, I could do with all the points I can get!
