Perhaps no camera system is more iconic and more polarizing than the Leica M system. While some see it as an overly extravagant status symbol for wealthy people, others absolutely swear by both the experience it offers and the images it produces. So, who is the system really for? This fantastic video review features one photographer sharing his thoughts after four years of using Leica M cameras and lenses.
Coming to you from Justin Mott, this interesting video review discusses his thoughts after four years with the Leica M system. No doubt, the M system is very polarizing, but it also features some of the most fiercely loyal users of any camera brand. Many appreciate the rangefinder, both because it keeps you connected to the scene and because it allows you to see outside the frame through the viewfinder, making it ideal for genres like street photography, where being able to anticipate action is critical. And, of course, there are the images, which have the famous "Leica look." I have to admit I have always been envious of that look, and I bought an old Leica lens to adapt to my Canon cameras for experimentation, and it has been a lot of fun to use. Check out the video above for Mott's full thoughts on the Leica system.
I really enjoyed your video. I've got an M8.2 and an M10, and a few lenses, and I considered the M10-D but it was no longer available. I especially love your photos. For what you do, photographically speaking, I would have guessed you would have preferred a DSLR, but everything you say makes sense. Thank you. I don't really have any questions - what I might have asked, you already answered!
I did use an DSLR for many years but this system works for me at this point in my career. . Thanks for watching .
I tried Leica some years back but ultimately didn't stick with it. The lenses are indeed great, but there's no "Leica look". Other brands' top lenses are as good and for much less money, albeit bigger. And rangefinders are always at risk of misalignment.
The «Leica look» is just marketing bs to try to justify the insane price of Leica gear. I have owned 9 Leica M/Q/S bodies and there’s NOTHING you can’t do with a 1000$ camera. Plus, the reliability and customer is a plain joke…
It’s good to see someone photographing a genre usually shot with a mirrorless camera and autofocus lenses using a Leica M10-D with no rear screen and with manual lenses. Just goes to show not every photographer needs the latest technology like tracking and IBIS to indulge in their passion…and even get paid for it.
Thank you Sam :).
Thank you Alex for sharing this and thank you everyone for watching. - Justin
