Portrait photographers generally prefer focal lengths over 50mm. This is because these types of focal lengths help to produce a more flattering look. Personally, I find a 50mm lens to be slightly too wide and an 85mm lens just a tad too long. For this reason, I thought I'd compare two lenses that sit in-between these focal lengths.
In our latest video, I compare the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 against the relatively new Sigma 65mm f/2.0 lens. Although the focal length and apertures are different, they're close enough for a comparison to be made.
The most immediate difference between the two is the price point. The Sony lens is currently priced at almost $1,000, whereas the Sigma is a less expensive lens with a price point of only $699. Of course, the price is only one aspect, and for many people, good performance can be invaluable.
It's for this reason we decided to run a number of tests on each lens to see how they would perform. To keep the comparison fair, we shot both lenses on the Sony a7R III camera. The images were shot in both real-world and controlled situations.

I’ve had the Sony 55 for seven years and have used it extensively. It’s a pretty strong performer. Works well for full length and mid shots though for those close- ups I find it a tad wide preferring the look of the 85. Though I have to say I’d be pushed telling the difference between an image shot at 50 from one shot at 55.
Third party lenses and Sony go hand in hand.
Having left Sony a few years ago, I really enjoyed the 55mm f/1.8 on my A7RII. Pretty crazy to see it get licked by Sigma.

I rented the Sony 55 and then bought the Sigma 65. I really liked the Sony but that CA was a little annoying. I then read some potential issues with decentering. It got me freaked out enough to check out the 65.
I like everything about the Sigma except the weight. It's a bit front heavy and significantly heavier than the Sony. The image quality was so much better than the Sony that I'm dealing with the extra weight.
Finally, the difference in focal length is something I'm still trying to get used to. Overall, still a nice optic that pairs well with my 35mm.
