Hummingbirds are some of the most beloved birds out there, but they are small and fast and have some attributes that can make them especially difficult to photograph. Hummingbirds are some of the most beloved out there, but they can be particularly tricky to photograph, as they are small and fast, and their wings beat so quickly that freezing them in motion is also a challenge. In fact, the average hummingbird flaps its wings an astonishing 50 times per second, meaning that even if they are hovering in place, you have to carefully consider your shutter speed and if you want to render the wings to show motion or to freeze them in mid-air. They certainly present a challenge, but they are also such beautiful creatures that it can be especially awesome when you manage to get a great shot.
