Can You Photograph the Milky Way With Just a Phone?

Astrophotography is a genre that requires some of the most extreme and specialized gear. At the same time, though, photographic technology has made some remarkable leaps in the last few years, with some of that technology making its way into smartphones. Can you photograph the night sky with just a phone? This great video shows what you can accomplish.

Coming to you from Brent Hall, this fun video follows him as he photographs the Milky Way with just a tripod and the new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra phone, a device that has been making waves with its 108-megapixel resolution and 8K video with still image extraction. In a genre where light is at a premium, you might imagine a smartphone camera is at a major disadvantage, but it is actually rather impressive what Hall is able to coax out of the camera. Now, obviously, the images are not as good as those you could get out of a dedicated astrophotography setup with a full frame camera, wide-aperture lens, and German equatorial mount, but the fact that you can get legitimately decent results from a phone on a tripod is quite remarkable. Check out the video above for Hall's full thoughts.
