Unfortunately, that someone will be a person with the farthest reach, least apprehension of being in "everyone's face" about his/her participation and constant promotion for others to enter "under" them, since there's another vote to be gained through that. It's a popularity contest, nothing more.
I get the idea of why you're doing it this way, yet the photographers who are doing their job based on quality and less "HEY LOOK AT ME!"; those are disadvantaged from the get-go. That in itself, is saddening. There are more creative ways, unfortunately, you decided not to explore any of those.
It's still a lottery, and like the lottery, the person with the most tickets still doesn't always win :)
Indeed, correct. Yet, we don't have to dissect the statistical chances for a participant with one entry vs. one with more than one. :)
It's all good though. I'm just pointing out the obvious shortcomings of the "contest". In all other regards, FS does mostly a fantastic job.
If I share the contest link to get better chances to win then more people will do so and so on, so it will be less likely for me to win if I share instead of the opposite. It's simple math. I think the ones that will share the most are those with blogs or lots of people on their reach, they are the ones with the better changes with this method, the ones like me who doesn't have too much reach are better off without sharing probabilistically speaking.
But who knows wich method they use, maybe they choose themselves instead of making it just by luck, we don't know and their word couldn't be enough, if they want to make this all legal and fair they should do a livestream video or something and show the winner taken from a bowl with all the names (wich were introduced in front of the live stream showing that everyone that participated it's not been excluded, then show 10 random other tickets from the bowl to guarantee there are not the same name or something like that. Or asign a number from the lotery to every contestant, there are ways to proof legality in this kind of things, but maybe it's not their desire to prove anything to anyone, wich is fair enough (kind of).
I kind of agree. They should hold a photography contest with a set number of judges, where you could submit a letter of intent. Then the judges could decide who really deserves to win.
But at the same time, this isn't a popularity contest. More entries does not mean your chances highly improve, there will be thousands of other entries which have just as much chance of being randomly drawn.
Not necessarily true. I participated in a giveaway from red bull with 1 entry no referrals and ended up winning an iPad. Don't get so discouraged ;) YOU could win this thing :)

It's not wrapped in anything. They are giving away something for free and they need to see some benefit out of this. It's marketing their website in the social media era and I'm sure works very well because this giveaway has happened a few times now. Simple.
