Congratulations to the winners!

Congratulations to Marek Stefech for submitting the highest rated image and to Qais Zureikat as the random lucky winner of this week's Critique the Community. Please message Lee Morris after you head over to the Fstoppers Store to pick out your free tutorial.

The next Critique the Community is going to images inspired by "Joy". If you have an image to submit to this new Critique the Community, head over to the Joy Critique the Community Post here. Submissions are open until 11:15 PM Eastern Time on March 29th.

Rules & Prizes

For the next Critique The Community we will be judging "travel" photos.

The coronavirus is bumming all of us out and many of us are stuck inside for the next few weeks/months. We were supposed to be meeting Elia Locardi in Japan in a few weeks to begin filming another project, and I'm sad to say that it is now canceled. We need your help to cheer us up. Show us some of the most amazing travel photos so that we can decide where we want to vacation after this whole thing is behind us.

Is the submission limit still 2 or has it been bumped up?

I just got to ask why people bother doing these? I posted a cityscape, Long exposure with light trails and post processing and I immediately got a snapshot rating. 2 stars I am fine with, but why are so many people trying to sabotage others?

I’m okay with whatever rating people want to give. However, I really do believe in giving constructive feedback if you can if a one star is given. I think the more important factor here is that if a one star is given then there perhaps should be a requirement to post feedback with it?

I wonder a couple of things.

First, do people even understand the rating system?

Second, do they understand the concept of the show this "contest" is for?

Third, why is it so easy to throw out low scores and not provide any feedback on why it is a "SnapShot One-star" rated image or a "Needs work two-star" image?

You must see something that you don't like about it to throw those scores. Many of us would love to have you share your knowledge of photography to help us grow. Why not take a minute to share a tip or two and help a fellow photographer out?

The problem is Andy, unlike yourself, most people on here have a Portfolio that says '0'

Fully agree George... i dont mind people slating a photo if they have their own work to back it up, the internet needs to grow some bollocks in general though, too many sneaky rats making comments anonymously.

Well said, Andy!
Why are people so scared of giving out helpful hints and tips, we're ALL learning, even the most experinced of photographers and it's a great feeling to share and help others - it most certainly doesn't detract or diminish your own work, which I feel is the reason why most will not give comments after posting their low rating.

I agree with you to some extent that feed back is import, but since art is subjective it ... it just is what it is. With no accountability this is just what happens. (You gave me a 1 or 2 not because you didn't like the picture but because its not what you would have done)
Humans are fickle, but adding a requirement for a reason for giving a 1 star would be cool.

So many stunning and beautiful picture`s here. I will surprised if I end up with more than a 2.

hello all, just signed up free here, and read some of the comments.
I agree with healthy discussing. In terms of voting: could not be anonymous? Just an humble taking pictures lover :)

How many times do you have to edit your image to get that magic vote of 4+ stars.

These competitions seem to become the Fstoppers equivalent to a death match. Photos in my profile portfolio that have 4 stars and accolades from others in this community when posted to a competition magically drop to 1.98 or at best 2.24. I've gotten used to it. But DANG it's brutal.

Dynamics like this mean that these contests are worthless as contests, but do make good fodder for the YouTube videos.
The only real solution would be to appoint a jury for each contest. That would require more management, and willing juries. I've been on a website where this has be programmed and done.

so my last post in the competition, sheikh zayed grand mosque, was rated 3.49 with 43 votes half an hour ago...now 3.18 with 49 votes
i did the math and i found that the 6 new voters rated it 1 (snap shot)
i would like to thank those voters, it was raining with thunder claps when i stepped out and took this snap shot :)

That shot was one of my favorite in the contest, I gave it 4 stars. It’s very well done, you should be proud of your work.

Thank you so much Trevor, I'm glad you liked it

Thanks Mitchell, I agree so many good pictures that are undervoted.. I feel we need to have an offset squad to vote up good posts..

Your images are great.

This place is full of people who will vote others down to try and prop up their own poor self-esteem.

Well...i just gave it a 4 star dude. You feel a little better? Probably should of gave it a 5 star for being a fellow Fuji shooter.

Your Mona Lisa shot was excellent in my opinion I love the motion blur of the people and the mood I love it, you should be proud

I think there are just some of them out there purposely giving 1 stars. Im getting use to it.

Yes its silly, were here to share a passion

Also, consider this is a "contest" in which the contestants get to vote on each other's entries. How do you help your own work rise to the top? Don't be surprised if really good work is trashed. I'm under no illusions about the quality of my own entry, but I see some excellent images here with ratings below where they should be. Why do people do that?

We are also supposed to be a community. I do not mind a low score if the person giving it takes a minute to share how to improve the shot. If I take the time to score below a three, I try to give some constructive criticism. I will also give some CC if the three are close to being a four.

I guess that is just me. I figure if I can help another photographer my day is a good day. I want to give back to the community as many other photographers have done for me.

Link it here and ill give a comment. I was looking at your profile, it seems you lose a bit of the magic in your work in post. Too much HDR. Or at least, too obvious looking like HRD.

If you are demanding an explanation as to why you received a low rating, then you should be giving thank yous to all those who give you high ratings.

To me the idea of a critique is to get feedback about what is and is not good. So I think it makes sense to be interested in why someone thinks a photo is not yet ready for portfolio or not a good portfolio image or whatever. That is THE point of critique.

I think that this is a good idea, but once again with this format, there is no way to know who did give you a high rating. Thanking people before they do it seems generic and may even incline people to not rate you as high as they might. "Thank you in advance for rating my picture highly" just seems cocky.

If someone gives you a 4 or 5, you'll get a message telling you that that person liked your photo

Is that true for the competition as well? I knew that I get those on my portfolio, but I didn't know about on this.

Do you get actual email/message; or just the bell notifications?

Hello, Dwandr here nice to meet you and be part of this community. I’m quite new here but I have 2 propositions to make for the rating system: 1) when rated “ needs work “ can you pls give constructive feedback about what you would change or do different 2) Maybe make rating only possible for members that have a portfolio here. Sometimes I see comments from some ppl where I would love to see their work from. Just curious :) Greetings from isolated Belgium, stay healthy 💪🏽

The contest on photos taken during the quarantine has been rated but that contest came after this one... did I miss something? Do they often take them out of order to critique the community or did they forget this one (Travel Photos)?

blackzeddie avatar

Patrick Hall , this is stuck as an active contest.

Are they ever going to review these photos?

But they haven’t announced any winners?? At least that is what the contest says

The winners are in the video. They must have just forgotten to hit publish on the tab on this page that usually lists the winners, but it's just a list of the photos in the critique with the youtube video embedded.
