Chris Jackson is the man behind the official photos of the Royal family, traveling the globe with William, Kate, and company to document their lives. And he's now revealed some of the details of his day-to-day schedule.
He covers the Royals on behalf of Getty, who then distribute the images across the globe. He has been photographing them for over 10 years, building trust so that he can "create a unique archive of the British royal family in the best possible way [he] can."
Aside from following them to royal engagements, he is also permitted one-on-one portrait time with the family. The portrait below was taken on George's fourth birthday.
Photographing the royal family is different than celebrities. You’re creating historic photos. […] There's a lot of formality in the royal family, and that's what makes them the royal family and what gives it a sense of history. But with younger members being involved in charities people really appreciate the genuine moments, and that's a real priority for me — to try and capture those.
Jackson began his photo career in sales for Getty. Following the engagement of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, he says photographing the royals became a full-time job. But it's one that he says encompasses everything he loves about photography. His role includes lots of travel, working alongside charities, and being on hand to capture those historic moments. While Jackson notes that there is "a lot of formality" within the family, he says he gets to capture a lot of genuine moments, too, particularly with the younger generation who often release announcements and updates on Twitter and Instagram.
