Primes, zooms, telephoto, wide angle, zooms, macro, tilt-shift: the sheer variety of camera lenses is astounding, and when you are new to photography, it can be a bit difficult to know what you should be looking for for your own work. This excellent video will introduce you to the most common types of lenses, what they are useful for, and how you can take advantage of them in your own work.

Of course, lenses are one of the most fundamental pieces of equipment for any photographers, and they give you tremendous capabilities and flexibility in determining what you shoot and how you render an image. One of the most important distinctions is between zooms (variable focal length lenses, typically larger and with smaller maximum apertures) and primes (fixed focal length, typically smaller and with wider maximum apertures). Your camera likely came with a kit zoom lens. If so, it is well worth getting a prime lens to try working with, as this often enables lots of different capabilities not generally possible with a kit zoom.
