A Guide to Quick and Simple Portrait Retouching

One of the most fundamental skills anyone shooting portraits should have is a good understanding of basic retouching. This helpful video will show you everything you need to know to effectively retouch portraits in Photoshop.

Coming to you from Aaron Nace with Phlearn, this helpful video will show you how to perform effective and efficient skin retouching using Photoshop. Among the helpful tips, another useful one is to reduce the hardness of the clone stamp tool when using it. By using a softer edge, you'll automatically create transitions between the areas you're cloning and those you're not, which will make it far easier to blend your edits. Furthermore, when you're new to retouching, it's very easy to go overboard with it and end up with an image that's unrealistic or over the top. Take time to step away from your work for a few minutes when you think it's done, then come back to it with fresh eyes. This helps to ensure that you don't fall prey to a bit of tunnel vision in the editing process and that you're able to evaluate your work a bit more objectively when you're finished. Check out the video above for the full rundown of all the processes.
