Of all the tips, my personal favorite is erring on the side of keeping it simple. It can be very easy to overdo it in terms of your set or props or the like when doing these sorts of sessions, and this can have a few detrimental effects. First, if you're shooting lots of sessions, it can make you very inefficient. While you certainly want a holiday theme, the viewer doesn't need that much help figuring out what's going on. Second, too many props or the like can take the viewer's focus away from what really matters, the human connection during a special time. Lastly, it can make the photos a bit cliché.
