2.42 - "Needs Work"

I spent a lot if years using only natural light for portraits because I found studio lighting/strobes so challenging. Over the past years, though, I started feeling like my images were missing something; so, I decided to start experimenting with strobes.

As I started understanding it more and more, I found my love of the art of photography reignited. During November and December, law enforcement agencies have started participating in "Movember" to bring awareness to issues like prostate cancer, colo-rectal cancer, and testicular cancer.

A good friend of mine who is a Mounted Officer with the Santa Monica Police Department grew his beard out last December, so I asked him to let me shoot his portrait. This was my favorite shot from the shoot because of the Old West/Civil War era feel it has.

Shot with a Nikon D750 and a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 G lens set at f/2.5, ISO 100, at 1/80 sec. Flash was a Nikon SB-800 using a Phottix Raja 85cm Octagonal softbox, along with a large white piece of cardboard to fill in the shadows. Backdrop is a Kate foldable backdrop.
