This image is of Fritz Dutter. A then shelterless man living in Petaluma, CA. He was part of a photo series I did on plight of the homeless in Northern California. I met Fritz one afternoon behind a strip mall. We met once or twice a week for about 5-6 months. He gave me creditability and access to a world I never imagined. Fritz was an avid chess player and I met him regularly even after I was finished with the photo series.
The raw image was converted to BW in Capture One. I added some contrast, clarity and boosted the structure a small amount. The photo was taken in the closed doorway which had an overhang. It was morning and the sun was still low and it created some natural backlight as it reflected off the tan doorway. The biggest challenge was the uneven lighting and avoiding clipping.
