Each of the three images submitted to this contest were captured last week in Yellowstone National Park with my new Sony A1ii camera and Sony 400-800mm lens. We saw a field of grazing bison and looked up to see these bison coming down the steep hill with the intention of going in the water to join the other bison. The challenge was in using my camera and lens for the first time and of course to focus on the eyes of all three bison and the action. Post processing is minimal and included one mask on the subjects.
In addition to the idea of mimicking a road runner concept, this image connects to modern photography that has evolved beyond simple documentation to narrative storytelling. This scene of the bison moving from land to water tells the story of animal behavior and the relationship between wildlife and landscape. Contemporary wildlife photography focuses on such contextual moments rather than static portraits.
