Portrait of an arabian mare. Horse placed in the entrance of the barn with head outside on a fairly bright, but overcast day. Natural light only. The barn causes the hindquarters to fade into the dark. It's impossible for me to get this particular barn completely dark, so the horse has been selected and the background has been made completely black in Photoshop.

(Usually we use a "photography halter" made of paracord around the horses neck and nose, and we retouch it out in post. This one was just standing in the open barn door with no halter or lead rope. To get a more "awake" expression and ears forwards we use different tricks like holding a mirror up in front of them, playing horsey sounds on my phone or shaking a bucket with treats.)
