Early one July morning, on a cold winters day, just as the sun was peeking over the horison, i came across a pride of lions south of Nossob in Kgalagadi hunting a herd of "wildebeest" ie Gnu as they grazed in the Nossob riverbed. This lioness appeared to be fixated on the calves in the herd and she was using the embankment along the side of the dirt track as cover. Exercising patience and cunning she gradually moved nearer to the herd of Gnu while still using the embankment as cover. The light was fairly soft as the sun was just starting to breach the horison. Despite my close proximity to the lioness and the rest of the pride she never once took her eyes off the prey and looked my way. The wind at this time of day was fairly light and the herd of Gnu were upwind of the pride. Had the herd been downwind of the hunting pride they certainly would have picked up the scent of the lionesses doing the hunt and run off. Here i used the fujifilm XT4 and the fujinon 100-400 zoom lens at 270mm, ISO 500, 1/500s, f5.
