I made a series of these and then decided, with later shots, to add the shell necklaces that were a gift from my sister. We're Samoan, but these necklaces come from other Islands. Mostly from Tuvalu, with others from the Cook Islands and Tokelau.

Converted to BW in Photoshop with minor tweaks to the sharpness.

There is an asymmetry to this image, not just with the necklaces etc, that makes this image uncomfortable for my friends and family, as I am not normally this stoic in person. That might have been because at the time I shot this I was not feeling well and by the end of the day I was rushed to hospital with pneumonia. My family who are medical professionals said I was one of the many walking sick that they have seen over the winter.

Cool.

Excellent portrait, but I had to take 1 star off and rate it 3 stars because i don't see it being matching contest "Soft" theme. I'm pretty sure many did the same. It would be rated higher in "portrait", "B&W", or "single light" themed contest. When it comes to that asymetrical part of necklace, you should consider to photoshop it out and see which version you like more. I think it is more dividing, if not completely taking attention away from your face.
