I shot it using my Canon 7D. For the past few years, I've approached strangers at the beach and asked if they'd like a free 10 minute photoshoot. But on this night, I had my eyes set on shooting a small boat about 100 yards away from where these girls were. I had left a bag of food that was covered and protected on my towel, and a handful of pesky seagulls hellbent on dinner still managed to pluck through. The lead female of this teenage group, Zariah, jumped into action and fought them away. I saw this happening from a distance and had to scurry back. I was so grateful for the food save that I offered some photos of their friendship, as they were all enjoying a summer sunset together. This is overlooking a barge in Weymouth, Mass., with the sunsetting just west of the Boston skyline.
