The iPhone 7 Will Probably Have Dual Cameras on the Back: Here's Why

Cell phone cameras are getting better and better each year as sensor technology improves, but zooming still doesn't really work. Yes, you can "zoom in" with your iPhone, but it's not a real optical zoom. Really, you are just cropping into your picture or video, which means the further you "zoom," the lower resolution you will end up with.

The obvious workaround for this issue is to add a mechanical, moving lens element to one or more of the glass elements in front of the sensor. This would allow the phone's camera to actually zoom in optically. Sadly, there just isn't enough room for this.

Each year, the technology in phones gets more powerful, but our cell phones are becoming thinner as well. Putting moving parts in a cell phone is becoming more and more difficult. Moving parts also make cell phones more susceptible to breaking during drops.

Corephotonics claims to have the answer. Instead of making a single camera with a thick, zoomable lens, they are creating multiple cameras and lenses that can be used as one single camera. One camera and lens have a wider view, while the other camera and lens are zoomed in. Software is then used to combine the two images into one much sharper shot.

This technology would allow cameras to grow in width, but not thickness, and fit easily on thin mobile devices. Of course, the downside to this technology is that these smaller sensors will never be able to compete with larger sensors in low light.

It's certainly a step in the right direction, but adding more cameras and lenses does not seem like the most economical option in the long run. Of course, the creators of the Light camera would disagree with me.

Didn't LG had this times ago? The hype with this underpowered phone makes my skin cringe!!

Apple is not first to the market. They bring it to the market when it is perfected.

Technology and perfect are words that never should be used in the same sentence.

what phone are you talking about? The iPhone 7 hasn't been announced, we know of no specs, so you certainly can't be talking about that...

It may not have been announced but its no secret that Apple releases the flagship iPhone every year in september. Apple has not released any information themselves, but the manufacturing facilities often leak info on the construction, information which can be used to learn quite a bit about the phone.

The LG V10 released late October of last year has dual cameras in the front. I have this phone and it's freakin' awesome. The manual video options are a dream. I've actually used this in small commercial work and people are surprised what phones are able to do now.

The recently announced LG G5 will have dual cameras in the back :)

what about writing about how cool that phones are getting dual lenses for zooming, and that there is in fact at least one phone soon on the market that has it. And not about a product thats 5-6 months away that may or may not have it? ;)

but yeah, dual lenses looks cool. like the wide angle lens on the G5. It's only 2x zoom afaik. But it's a start.

Yet another reason for them to increase the price of the already exhorbitantly priced iPhone 6/6s...

Price seems fair to me considering the tech involved.

Kaz, you are a fanboy! What tech? The one present on android phones since 2012? Or the dual core not even 2GHz processor, with 1GB of RAM? For half the price, i've laid my hands on a Quad-Core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 810 with 3GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage, 4K video, Sony Exmor 214 camera with 13 megapixel with DNG RAW files. Tell me again about the iPhone tech..

Because we need to shoot DNG Raw files on our phones to post on instagram and Facebook. Also everyone in the tech industry knows iPhones run just as fast as the top android phones even with less hardware.

Do they? Hmmmmm ok, my iPhone 5 was a flop, sold it. And now i'm just finding the right excuse to ditch my iPad.

Good for you troll, no one cares.

You seem to care enough...buzz off!!

Oh my god - dare someone say a phone is reasonably price and you jump to accusations of being a fanboy??? The pricing structure has been the same for a while now. The iPhone is a luxury product, the build quality (fit and finish) is unrivaled by any other manufacturer. The only price increase is the plus size (for good reason). The octo/quad-core processors are completely unnecessary, same with ram (the iPhone has 2GB of ram btw). Charles is right, side by side there is no appreciable difference in real world performance. Many android users are too obsessed with specs, as if that is the only criteria to compare and review phones. Apple waits to refine instead of pushing unproven tech. Androids are good for people who care about specs and gimmicky features, but the truth is most people don't care. (Bias: iPhone 6s plus for work, Samsung GS6 edge plus for personal)

Specs vs Price. Not obcessed with specs. Yes 2GB, just went to check my info. My iPhone 5 had 1GB of RAM and after iOS8 it became just a damn brick. So yeah, for half the price i still get more. Luxury? Yeah, i'd rather spend that luxury on some L lenses instead of a phone. Just sayin'. Still, i'm yet to see this new camera thing, and how it will perform on android phones aswell.

Then go buy an android phone. They are no cheaper.

you ask what tech Paulo? well, the tech that "seems" to be half or a quarter of an top android phone, yet is faster. Now that's great tech if you ask me.
Sincerely, an Android user. ;)

Come to Canada...we have some of the most expensive mobile plans in the world, on top of the cost of the phone, if the phone prices keep going up, having a mobile period is going to become a luxury.

There is more Cellphones with more or less better cameras then iphone but still you are mentioning only this one brand .... hidden advert ?

Not sure why everyone hates on iPhones or camera phones. To date, my favorite shots I've ever taken were on my iPhone, of my kids, in moments that I would have missed looking for my camera. My overpriced, non-RAW shooting iPhone has given me some great memories, and I welcome any addition that helps me capture better memories of my kids. When I really care about the image quality as it relates to what others think of it, I'll reach for my medium format back. But at the same time, we take the most pictures in our house with our phones and they serve us just fine for screen savers and printing for the grandparents. Bring on more mobile tech!

Anybody remember the LG Env2? That phone was awesome.

I’m impressed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s both educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
