More Canon Mirrorless Cameras Are Coming in 2021

After getting off to a somewhat middle-of-the-road start with the EOS R and EOS RP, Canon blew the doors off the photography industry with the upcoming R5, which has jaw-dropping specs across the board. Not content to stop there, the company will likely be releasing two more mirrorless bodies in 2021.

Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon's plans show two more EOS R bodies slated to be announced and released in 2021. While it is not clear where these bodies will fit in the lineup yet, there are a few potential scenarios. Personally, I would be very surprised to not see a high-megapixel body (an R5S or something similar), particularly since Canon's RF lenses have been so spectacular and really begging for a body with more resolution to show them off. Beyond that, I would not be surprised if the second body is the flagship R1. With the Olympics being moved to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Canon has been handed a golden opportunity. Since the Olympics are often the place companies show off their latest and greatest gear, the extra year has given the company a chance to prepare and distribute the R1 to the right photographers in time for the games.

It still is not clear if Canon plans to create APS-C RF mount cameras, particularly since they seem to be pushing forward with the EF-M mount. Either way, 2021 should be quite exciting for Canon shooters!

I hope they release something with features and functionality aimed at still photographers. I have zero interest in shooting 4k video, let alone 8k, so unless there's something about the R5 we haven't heard in terms of still photography is a pass for me.

In terms of camera image quality, photography has reached its plateau. We have so many options depending in our use case. Heck there are no bad cameras nowadays.

But the world is evolving as there are now hybrid (photo & video) shooters who "need/want" this kind of products, I hope Canon delivers.

Is the market ready? That should be the question. :)

You are not the first one saying so, but why don't you think R5 is aimed for still photographers? The formfactor tells it is still primarily a stills camera. It does12fps (20fps electronic), has animal detect AF with modes optimized for dogs, cats and birds. It is 45megapixels - And it has what everybody has been screaming about the last year: IBIS and dual card slots.
The latest announced R5 spec-details was announced as bonus info at an event that was otherwise all about Canon's Pro Cinema/video equipment. So of course any additional info added about R5 had to be video-themed. But as I see it, the video-capabilities is still just bonus on an otherwise still photography aimed camera. And 8K is good for marketing/headlines :-)

Stig?! Are you the guy that used to do the performance driving on 'Top Gear'? :-) I'm pretty sure that the stills only people believe that if Canon would make an R5 like camera minus the video capability, it would be relatively inexpensive. But, because in today's market, a stills only camera would be a low volume seller, it would cost more if Canon wanted to make a profit on the body.

You're right, though. If the R5 lives up to its preordained destiny, it's going to be a terrific stills camera.

Just in case you've never heard of 'the Stig': :-)

The only thing we don't know so far about the R5 (that stills shooters care about) is dynamic range. If it has dynamic range at least as good as the 5DM4 it's a likely buy for me. If it has dynamic range better than than the 5DM4 it's a no debate buy right now deal. I shoot portraits and boudoir. Functional and fast Eye AF is a game changer worth upgrading to, but not in the EOSR which produces nearly identical images to my 5DM4. I'm cautiously excited and I don't care about video at all.

I just want a Mirrorless camera from Canon that I can use my 10-22mm, 24mm e 40mm pancakes without an adapter for my casual and traveling.
