News About Canon's Most Important Cameras Emerges

The 1 Series and 5 Series are Canon's most important professional bodies, representing their flagship and workhorse cameras, respectively. As such, many users are eagerly awaiting more information on the upcoming EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II cameras, and we now know a bit more.

Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon will probably announce the EOS R5 Mark II in the coming months, likely in late spring, with an EOS R1 development announcement coming at the same time or soon after. This generally lines up with about when one would expect to start hearing official word about the EOS R1, as Canon often showcases 1 Series bodies at the Summer Olympics, and camera companies have started to trend toward slow product reveals for their high-level offerings in recent years in an effort to build hype. Indeed, a further update has indicated that the camera will be available to pros at both UEFA Euro 2024 and the Summer Olympics, with consumer availability to follow in the fall.

On the other hand, this would constitute an earlier-than-expected announcement date for the EOS R5 Mark II, though it would certainly fall in line with traditional release cycles for the 5 Series, which average around 3.5 to 4 years between models. The original thought was that Canon would want to focus attention solely on the EOS R1, but they may have other plans in mind, particularly since 5 Series bodies are such popular workhorses among a variety of professionals, and may want to get it to market sooner. Hopefully, we'll hear more soon!
