Nikon's Professional Mirrorless Camera Is Coming in the Next Year

The Nikon Z 6 and Nikon Z 7 have been generally well received, with the Z 50 filling out the current lineup at the lower end. There is still room to grow in both directions, however, and it seems that will soon be the case, with at least two new cameras expected from the company in the next year or so.

According to Nikon Rumors, both a Z 8 model and a Z 30 body are expected to be announced later this year. The Z 8 would be a professional-level model, rumored to have a 61-megapixel sensor, the same sensor that would be in the D850 replacement. On the other hand, the Z 30 would slot into the lineup below the Z 50 and would be an APS-C model without a viewfinder. Given the Z 50's current price of about $850, it would be interesting to see just how low the Z 30 can go, which could make it a fantastic entry point or backup body for lots of photographers. Personally, given the upcoming Z 8, I would expect to also see a decent influx of more advanced lenses. All this being said, given the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, these timelines are subject to change, but it is certainly exciting to see the Nikon mirrorless system continuing to expand!

If the Z7 opened up at $3500, what's the 8 going to open up at?

Pro level, I’d bet it starts around $6000

That puts it in the D6, 1DxIII class. I would think that this is the replacement for the D850. If it's the D850 replacement, I don't think they will sell many at $6000.

Hell no. 4,400 at most dude.

More than I can afford. And yeah, probably in the D6 class. I would have thought the Z7 is the D850 replacement (card slot notwithstanding).

My guess is the initial price will be right about the same as the intro price of the Z7.

It'll probably be on par with Sony's a7 IV.

I'll gladly pay $3999 for the Z8 if it has full frame 4K60.

Looks like a warmed over D850 without a mirror.

a $3500 Z7 isn't professional? I mean the body might not be, but the price sure is.

I've been just an amateur then. Using toy cameras like the Z6 for work did pay my bills.
But hey, internet judge it as a very incapable camera because it's not for pro.

Nevermind all the pros that still use 5D MkIII's... If it's more than a year old and costs less than $3,000 it isn't a pro camera (according to the internet).

Dont forget those APS-C Fujis etc that cant possibly be ever used by anyone other than beginners and amateurs with their tiny useless sensors.

Interesting. But while I am committed to Nikon, i'm likely to be dead before a range of equipment similar to what I currently own and use with my two Nikon DSLRs exists, and the tradeup cost would be horrendous, now that I'm retired.
I think I'm more likely to sit back and watch what the generations behind me manage, with this gear.
Meanwhile, my pairing of the D500 with the D850, and supporting glass etc, achieves everything I want from the wonderful world of digi. ANd if I do want to try something else, it's more likely to be the "big SIG" that's been in the air for quite a while - a full frame Foveon. Not "more of the same" - but something that's better AND different.

As someone who's likely multiple generations behind you, the D850 is still a marvel of digital technology. Couldn't afford it when it was new but I'd be happy to shoot with one today.

Nikon was very late to mirrorless and the Z rollout has been painfully slow.

The last thing I want is 61 megapixels, unless the sensor size is enlarged accordingly.

I'm still not really seeing the point of sensors bigger than 24mp. Birds, wildlife, maybe.

Ecomm, customers love zooming in 1000% on product shots to see weave, stitching, zipper brand, etc.

A bit of a niche, I'd say.

Sensor technology has improved significantly thus making it possible to increase resolution without affecting other aspects of the image quality.
So why not slap it in cameras intended for a wide variety of photographers.

I'm still not getting any benefit from that 'slap'. Just enormous files that slow everything down, and increased cost.

Then it's basically not for you. You're not obligated to purchase a camera that doesn't suit your needs.

I replaced my D610 with a D850 because it was the cheapest way to get the D5’s AF and metering systems. I could have lived without the 46mp but it does allow a lot of room to crop whilst maintaining resolution. Quite apart from that, it’s a lovely sensor, there’s very little this camera can’t do.

No more APSC mirrorless from Nikon!! Please! They cannot compete with Fuji and Sony. They just need to focus on making the most amazing 24mp and 50 mirrorless they possibly can.

They need to. To encourage new potential customers, manufacturers needs an affordable entry level camera.
Cameras that will cost $1,000 and above won't appeal to many if they can buy a flagship smartphone for the same price.

Z30 is a HORRIBLE IDEA. NIKON is about the most foolish camera company in the world. People have phones, they don't fucking need a small camera without a viewfinder

Even though phones with great cameras exists, there are still potential consumers who will consider buying entry level cameras.
Mostly just because they're curious, some will be students or aspiring photographers, and the rest will be people starting from a low budget.

It all now depends on how the ease of use and sharing the images. Nikon needs to significantly improve their wireless utilities for transferring images to users phones. They need to invest now on software development for the consumer side of things.

The "Z30" is basically not for you. It's an introduction camera body to entice people to invest on Nikon mirrorless system.

IMHO to keep selling cameras to people other than "pros" they need to push the idea of LENSES as the way to go beyond the smartphone.

In line with that goal, it would be nice if they actually had a full line of affordable native Z mount lenses including a few more DX.

I'd have liked something that filled the gap between the Z6 and Z50... some lower end Zx or higher end Zxx.

I own a Z6 and a Z50 and am not conscious of a gap needing to be filled.

Yeah... precisely because you have both. If I own a tiny sports car and a larga sedan, I don't need a sports sedan.

It is true that if they'd had a better DX I might not have bought the Z6.

The Z50 is really nice, though. Having used it for a while I don't think I'd change a single thing.

I guess I'd miss having the top display, but I'd have to see if I eventually got used to it. What I'd definitely need though is a headphone jack, as I do take a lot of videos with my cameras.

If the Z50 only had in body stabilization....I got too used to it with my Pentaxes...but the Z50 otherwise looks like a great crop sensor.

Until then I'll be using the heck out of my D850 :D

The title is amusing since ANY camera can be used professionally. Additionally, since just about any modern camera today either crop or FF (entry level) can be used for "pro" work
