Step Aside Sony, Canon’s First Full-Frame Mirrorless May Go on Sale This Year

You’ve probably involuntarily drooled over Sony’s a7 III and dreamed of the day you too can enjoy the compact mirrorless format with your own lenses. Well, the wait may be over for faithful Canon shooters.

Fresh rumors of an announcement (and sale) of Canon’s first mirrorless full frame camera just got bumped from 2019 to 2018.

I too long for a mirrorless system. As a one-bag digital nomad, the compact format and lighter weight would be a welcome replacement for my faithful, but heavy, 5D Mark III. I’m not keen on dealing with lens adapters or Sony’s infamous camera menu, so I could be persuaded to hold off on switching to Sony for my next camera. A switch wouldn’t be a big issue for me since I’m pretty minimalist and shoot with one lens, but folks who’ve invested thousands in Canon glass may well have a travel-friendly upgrade on their Christmas wishlist.

Per the latest mumblings from Canon Rumors, Canon’s full-frame mirrorless should be announced and go on sale before the end of the year. With Photokina coming up in a couple months, we may see an announcement sooner than that.

Are you considering a switch to Sony? Would you stick with Canon if their mirrorless debuts this year?

Yes, and the word is all over the internet, and you can expect it to be added to dictionaries in the next couple of years.

At least you tried.

Yes, because the internet is the penultimate arbiter of all truth.

You said it "is a word" and now you say it will be eventually.

Pick one, please. Rules are hard.

Wait... Why am i engaging with someone on this platform who hasn't the gumption to post a single picture to their profile?

Go shoot and get back to me.

Actually, the term "mirrorless" was chosen by CIPA, making it official. It is the proper term, making it a word.

OK, we have officially left the reservation when a manufacturer's association supposedly defines English words.

I'm out, and I apologize for fanning the flames.

Its called jargon. Its a proper term. It just means that the term has entered the lexicon of an industry or field. It is really not that big of a deal. Jargon exists for nearly every field out there, with much of it not existing in any dictionary, or even having a different definition.

T Dillon isn't quite right, but he's on the right track, when he said "jargon", he properly meant 'term of art'.

And yes, technical language can enter the lexicon.

Maybe I should show you my dictionary collection.

Common usage is the arbiter of what is correct language. You do realise that as words are adopted into use, that dictionaries subsequently adopt those words as entries? Don't you? You can't possibly think otherwise.

And if you knew anything, you would know that dictionaries are descriptive, not prescrptive.

And btw, why did you say "go shoot"? In your complete briliance, have you concluded that whether one shoots or not is a proxy for a knowlege of linguistics?

You're a special one.

But let me put it this way, there is no way on God's green Earth I would associate my brand with arguing on the Internet; that would be stupid, wouldn't it? Whereas, I know who you are, and you're a dick.

PS. penultimate

pɪˈnʌltɪmət/

adjective

last but one in a series of things; second last.

"the penultimate chapter of the book"

Not sure what this article was all about really - a Canon 5D Photographer fantasizing about a mirrorless system - pointing out the CONS for switching - yet reminds the reader that actually that would not be a Biggie for him since he only has on lens --- LOL - and then we're off to the Canon Rumor Mill - really !? Who wants to read such garbage really ...by the time Canon will come out with their first full frame Camera SONY will be miles ahead " again " - it will take CANON a few years to come close to SONY's 'Sensor-Game" . Sony has few lenses compared to CANON agreed - yet EVERY fix prime SONY lens we tested CANON comes not even close to - CANON is going to try to catch up with SONY for years to come - Mark my words - and by then maybe the author of this silly article made up his mind and exchanged his outdated CANON Body and ONE lens for a SONY ... until then Mr Martin you should NOT call yourself an Digital Nomad ...... TM

Yes SONY, please step aside while Canon trips and falls on its own!

Canon and Canon Only ; )

fuji is the best.

Love watching photography's 1% argue over camera technology when the other 90%+ couldn't tell the difference between an iPhone snap and a 5d3 photo, or even care. These niche battles from pros and wannabes over DSLR/mirrorless/Sony/Nikon/Canon dominance is entertaining if not a bit sad given the utter disruption camera phones have had on the industry. Given the stagnation in digital camera sales I'm surprised that the manufacturers haven't tried to get the dwindling enthusiast base to upgrade their machines on a more regular basis with new product offerings and this kind of debate among pros to generate enthusiasm over new tech. These camera manufacturers are fighting mightily for, at best, a stagnant user base. I suspect these battles to sell pro and enthusiast cameras to become even more fierce in the years to come. There will have to be consolidation, in my opinion, in the camera industry. Too few hands to put these cameras in. There is only so many pros and enthusiasts that will constantly upgrade to the latest incremental improvement. Pass the popcorn.

With all this debate, I still don't see substantially different photography being produced by cameras that don't have mirrors.

It's certainly not like the switch from rangefinder cameras to SLRs--which opened up new vistas of long telephoto, extremely wide-angle photography, and macro-photography that we hadn't seen before.

It's certainly not like the switch to auto-focus which brought accurate focusing of difficult subjects (like football with extreme telephoto lenses) to the average shooter.

For all the brou-ha-ha, I'm not seeing Sony photographers doing anything DSLR photographers can't do.

OTOH, I know for a fact that I would not be able to do video without Canon's touch-focusing.

For me, it wasn't about being able to take pictures I could never take before, it's about getting the same pictures with less effort (and fewer tries) and enjoying the process more.

Sony has no need to step aside. It will take years for Canon or Nikon to catch up.

Canon will screw it up somehow. They always do. Not sure what is going on with their segmentation, but it is simply terrible. But there is always something with Canon.

I might be completely wrong but its my point of view.

Sony marketing is doing this new thing called ... with this here gadget you too can make a 3 star gourmet meal with just a press of a button and no chef experience.

Their mass acceptance has not been fueled by actual photographers but by gadget and gear heads with minimal or nil knowledge of photography, but with fist full of cash and desire to make pro photos that has that "bokeh thing".

Now dont think of this as bashing Sony and their cameras. I have friends who have them and love them and they are pro photographers who can churn pro results regardless of camera they do it with ... Im just saying that Sony is using TV Shop mentality to sell their goods. One of those include ppl with hats and other less then knowledgable one hit wonders who are wildly popular among noobs for showing them that they too can produce amazing photos if they use Sony cameras and really really expensive lenses.

"Canon are getting there!" in terms of bodies sounds like "Sony are getting there!" in terms of lenses. Let them both call me when they finally get there :) To a more serious note - there is no perfect combo. Only perfect combo FOR YOU. One needs to know what they want from the gear and buy accordingly. I'm perfectly happy with my APS-C Canon camera. If I ever want professional work and have the money to invest, there will be plenty of options. As an "advanced amateur" though, I love the option of buying a good body and good lenses on the cheap, combined with good build quality and ease of use.

Despite the fact everyone is trying to have mirrorles, despite the fact Nikon has the best allround FF DSLR around, despite the fact I don't own much Canon glass I still plan to rely on DSLR for next few years (5?) and actually going to buy 5D mark IV or successor ...stupid? maybe; silly? 100%

Your headline just fans the flames, if this is a article about Canon's new Mirrorless why should any brand "step aside". Do we really want just one camera manufacturer to chose from.
