July Challenge - MINIMALISM

After recent challenges that were meant to push the boundaries of our imagination this month's challenge returns us to one of the core group styles - that being MINIMALISM.

Minimalism in a photograph to me means limiting key elements and making use of negative space. Successful images exhibit good compositional structure, balance and elements that hold the interest of the viewer.

So for this month's assignment let's replace the clutter from our images with harmony and simplicity.

For those who may feel reluctant to post their own images I would encourage that you join in the discussions. Every voice is both valid and important, there can be no such thing as a wrong opinion

To kick things off I include some images I have captured over the past few weeks. As always, comments/discussions around these are encouraged.

...and just to get the mind working.... some of these were shot with my DSLR, others with my iPhone - can you spot which are which?

If I had to guess 1, 4, and 5 are iphone and the jelly fish are dslr? Love the jelly fish shots btw!

Thanks for your input Kyle. I was waiting in the hope that others may feel inclined to discuss, but that seems unfortunately not the case.

Perhaps surprisingly, the first 2 were taken with the iPhone, others with the DSLR.

The Japanese Nettle (jellyfish) is an interesting example, as I took many more with the DSLR but I prefer the iPhone version. I am finding that LivePhoto mode on the iPhone really helps with moving subjects in capturing a preferred composition.

This is an image I shot while on a photography workshop In Death Valley in February. I shot it with a Sony HX-400V in the monochrome mode. The super zoom lens on the camera allowed me to isolate the lines of the dunes and create an abstract photo.

Lovely work Brian, and thanks for posting. I really love the way the shadows (late afternoon?) create the sharp ridges and textures in the lower dunes.

I'm hoping we'll see more from you!
